The Association of Mathematics, Physics and CSE Students (VMP) has honoured ten student assistants from the Departments of Mathematics and Physics with the VMP Assistant Award for the Autumn Semester 2023.

We are delighted to announce that the VSETH and VMP student associations have honoured Professor Vincent Tassion with the 2023 Golden Owl. In this interview, he talks about what the award means to him and the principles he follows when teaching maths.

The inaugural 2024 Elias M. Stein Prize for New Perspectives in Analysis is awarded jointly to Marcel Filoche and Svitlana Mayboroda for their original, powerful, elegant and impactful theory of the "localization landscape."

On 14 November, the 2023 Heinz Hopf Prize was awarded to Lai-Sang Young, a leading dynamicist since the 1980s whose contributions range from chaotic systems to computational neuroscience.

Siddhartha Mishra has been awarded this year's Rössler Prize for his research on solutions for highly complex flow and wave phenomena. He is being recognised for his contributions to faster and more accurate predictions of weather, climate and tsunamis, and for the computer simulations that enable them.

The Royal Society, a major scientific society, has elected the mathematician, ETH professor and winner of a Fields Medal, Wendelin Werner, as its Foreign Member. Werner is a leading researcher in the field of probability theory and the geometry of chance.

The Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics (FoCM) has awarded the 2020 Stephen Smale Prize to Professor Afonso Bandeira.

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Marloes Maathuis has been awarded the 2020 Van Dantzig Award. This prize is considered the highest Dutch award in statistics and operations research and is awarded once every five years.

On Monday, 28 October, Ehud Hrushovski will receive the 2019 Heinz Hopf Prize. With the award, ETH Zurich honours the contributions of the Oxford mathematician to model theory – both to developing the subject, and to applying it to diverse areas of mathematics.

Siddhartha Mishra is the winner of the 2019 ICIAM Collatz Prize which is one of the most prestigious prizes awarded in applied mathematics.

Alessio Figalli, Professor of Mathematics at ETH Zurich, was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Rio de Janeiro today for his outstanding contribution to mathematical research. The medal is to mathematics what the Nobel Prize is to natural sciences.
