Enrolled students
The following information is intended for students on the Master’s degree programme in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.
All about your studies
Students enrolled in the Master’s in Mathematics, can choose freely from a wide range of core and elective courses. Attending at least one student seminar is required, and there is the option to write a semester thesis. Both pure and applied mathematics can be studied in this programme.
Student enrolled in the Master’s in Applied Mathematics can take core and elective courses in applied mathematics and choose a specialisation in one of many application areas. Writing at least one semester thesis in the field of the application area is mandatory, and there is the option to take a student seminar. A limited amount of courses in pure mathematics can also be taken.
Courses are structured into focus areas. They are no official part of the degree, but it is suggested that students focus their studies in a specific direction. These tracks should help to focus; they will not be mentioned on the diploma certificate.
An application to switch from the Master’s in Mathematics to the Master’s in Applied Mathematics, or vice versa, can be submitted to the Registrar's Office.
The Course Catalogue (VVZ) lists all courses offered by ETH Zurich and the Department of Mathematics.
The echo portal (German) complements the VVZ and provides additional information, such as collections of exercises or links to course homepages.
A range of students seminars is also offered each semester.
Semester papers are designed to provide in-depth study of a specific subject area. They are intended to develop the ability to carry out mathematical work independently and to present mathematical results in writing.
In the Master’s programme in Applied Mathematics, at least one semester paper must be written relating to the chosen field of application.
The Master’s thesis marks the conclusion of the degree programme. In this thesis, a major mathematical problem is addressed independently. The Master’s thesis generally involves studying existing specialist literature and solving further related questions. The Master’s thesis takes five months to complete and concludes with a written report, accompanied by a presentation where appropriate.
It is possible to have courses recognised that are not listed in the ETH Zurich Course Catalogue or are not included in your degree programme. You can also apply for recognition of courses at the University of Zurich. Please note that there is no automatic right to have such courses recognised.
Once the credits specified in the programme regulations have been earned, the Master’s degree studies can be completed and a degree request submitted. After submitting the degree request, students will also receive an invitation to the Master’s degree graduation ceremony.
Further services
If you have any academic questions regarding your study plans, please contact our study advisor. In particular, if you have questions about
- planning your studies, especially if the deadline to complete studies is approaching
- subject selection and recommended combinations
The Counselling & Coaching Centre (StS) offers a wide range of counselling services as well as many different support services for students. This support is available not only in the face of challenges in studies but also in situations that require additional coordination. The services are free of charge and confidential.
In the Department of Mathematics, many students are assigned to assist with exercise groups as teaching assistants. They may be assigned to lectures offered by the department itself, as well as to service lectures held for other departments.
The department’s library provides study spaces, lockers, reference materials and other services for students.
