The Department welcomes new students at home and in bubbles
For the 400 new students in the Department of Mathematics, the first day of the semester did not begin on site at ETH Zurich as in previous years, but at home at their computers.
This year's first-semester events were held in hybrid format: in the morning the Bachelor's and Master's degree students of the study programmes Mathematics, Computations Science and Engineering and Statistics were warmly welcomed in an online meeting by the Study Directors. This was followed by presentations of the most important contact points for students, such as the Study Administration or the Mathematics Library. In the afternoon they then had the opportunity to come to the ETH Main Building in small groups in order to get to know their fellow students, their study advisors and the student teaching assistants. In these small groups, also referred to as "bubbles", the students were taken on a campus tour led by members of the VMP. The students will spend the entire autumn semester in these bubbles to attend lectures and exercise classes. With this measure, the ETH Zürich tries to avoid too much mixing of the students and thus prevent the coronavirus from spreading.
We hope that the students had a good start at our Department and wish them every success in their studies!
