The Group

The Probability Theory Group is part of the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich.

Our activities include:

  • conducting high level research in probability theory.
  • maintaining an active scientific life through regular research seminars, long and short term visitors, and international collaborations. The Forschungsinstitut für Mathematik (FIM) and the Institute for Theoretical Studies (ITS) play a crucial role in this endeavor.
  • the training of doctoral students.
  • teaching, both at graduate and undergraduate level, for mathematics students in probability theory and in mathematics in general.
  • service teaching, mainly in probability, for other departments of ETH Zurich.

Note that the research and teaching activity of quite a few members of the Department of Mathematics who are not members of this group does also involve probability theory!

The group collaborates closely with its fellow researchers at the University of Zurich: the weekly Seminar on stochastic processes, as well as seminars for doctoral students and undergraduate students, are run jointly. Moreover, activities organized with other groups in Switzerland, such as the mathematics section of the University of Geneva, which have further been fostered by the external page NCCR SwissMAP project, take place quite regularly.
