Additional information

Michael Struwe is full Professor of Mathematics at the ETH Zurich.

Prof. Struwe was born on October 6, 1955 in Wuppertal, Germany. He holds both a German and Swiss citizenship. From 1974 to 1980 he studied mathematics at the University of Bonn. After receiving his doctorate in 1980, he was a member of the scientific staff in the special research sector 72 of the German research foundation and later an assistant at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn. He spent extended research visits in Paris and at the ETH Zurich.

In April 1986 Michael Struwe was appointed assistant professor at ETH Zurich. In 1990 he was elected associate professor, and in 1993 he became full professor of mathematics at ETH Zurich.
From October 2002 to September 2004 he served as head of the ETH Mathematics Department. Since 2006 he is a member of the board of the Zurich Graduate School in Mathematics (ZGSM), and since 2009 he is serving as director of ZGSM, alternating with Thomas Kappeler, University
of Zurich.

Michael Struwe's research focuses on non-linear partial differential equations and the calculus of variations as well as their applications in mathematical physics and differential geometry.

In 1984 he was awarded the Felix Hausdorff Prize of the University of Bonn. In 2006 he received the ``Goldene Eule'', an award for excellence in teaching offered by VSETH, and the Credit Suisse Award For Best Teaching. He again received the ``Goldene Eule'' in 2007 and 2012. In 2012, moreover, he was awarded the Cantor medal of the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung.

In 2013 Michael Struwe was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society; in the same year he was also elected a member of Leopoldina, the German National Academy of Science. He served as member of the 2014 Fields Committee of the IMU.

Michael Struwe is co-editor of the series «Zurich Lectures in Advanced Mathematics»; moreover, he is co-editor of the journals «Calculus of Variations» and «International Mathematical Research Notices».
