Abstract We consider the vanishing viscosity approximation of the traffic model proposed by Lighthill, Whitham, and Richards, in a network composed by a single junction with n incoming and m outgoing roads. We prove that a solution of the parabolic approximation exists and, as the viscosity vanishes, the solution of the parabolic problem converges to a solution of the original problem. The results were obtained in collaboration with Professor Mauro Garavello.

Abstract Abstract: Huisken and Sinestrari have recently developed a surgery-based approach to mean curvature flow of two-convex hypersurfaces according to which one removes, by hand, the regions of large curvature before a singularity forms. The program is controlled by a set of parameters prescribing when and where surgery is to be performed, and does not produce a weak solution of the flow in the traditional sense since it involves a non-canonical modification of the surface at each surgery time. In this talk we review the main ingredients in the Huisken-Sinestrari program and use them to produce new estimates for mean curvature flow with surgeries. Furthermore, by considering the effect of varying the surgery parameters, we determine the relationship between this solution and the well-known weak solution of the level-set flow.

Abstract We will review some developments in harmonic analysis which relate the curvature of a manifold to regularity properties of averaging operators associated with these manifolds. As it turns out, these properties reveal connections between measure theory (Kakeya sets), combinatorics (so-called extremal graph theory), harmonic analysis (restriction property of the Fourier transform), and PDEs (Strichartz estimates).
