Titel What is... a reinforced elephant random walk?

Abstract The elephant random walk (ERW) is a self-reinforced discrete-time process on multidimensional lattice which was introduced in the early 2000s by Schütz and Trimper in order to study how long-range memory affects the behavior of the random walk. In this talk, I will present the reinforcement mechanism and how martingale theory can be used to obtain results on the asymptotic behavior of the ERW, as well as some of its related processes (barycenter, moderate Cramér deviation...).

Abstract The study of abstract reflection groups is due to Tits, who defines Coxeter systems (W,S) through their presentation. There are many different combinatorial and geometric objects associated to such Coxeter systems (W,S). One of them is the Davis complex. The goal of this talk is to introduce abstract Coxeter groups and describe their associated Davis complex.

Abstract In this talk we will introduce quantum topology, which means using representations of quantum groups to construct topological invariants. The starting point of quantum topology is the Jones polynomial for knots and the Reshetikhin Turaev invariant for 3-manifolds. By studying these examples we can see how the concept of quantum groups naturally arises.

Referent:in, Affiliation Alessio Cela, ETHZ

Abstract The most basic question in enumerative Geometry is: How many lines are there through two distinct points? A natural extension of this question is to count the number Nd of rational curves of degree d passing through 3d-1 points in general position in the complex projective plane. I will explain how to formulate this problem using Gromov-Witten theory and Kontsevich solution to the problem in terms of a recursive formula which reduces the question to the computation of N1 = 1.

Titel What is... a brane?
Referent:in, Affiliation Dr. Lennart Döppenschmitt, Universität Zürich
Datum, Zeit 30. Mai 2023, 16:15-18:30
Ort KO2 F 150
Abstract I will attempt to give an answer in three parts. First I will argue that branes appear naturally as boundary conditions in quantum field theories, in particular, we will observe how Lagrangian branes are suitable boundary conditions in the topological A-model. We will proceed with a swift introductory "101" on generalized complex geometry to properly fortify our understanding of branes in the mathematical sense. Well-equipped with the proper language, we will go through three and a half examples among which is a new(ish) perspective on Kähler metrics as branes (yes, metrics can be branes). If time permits we will finish with a quick look at the role that branes play in the story of mirror symmetry à la Strominger-Yau-Zaslow.
