Teaching & Studies
The Seminar for Applied Mathematics (SAM) is responsible and takes care of education in numerical mathematics and methods on all levels and for all departments of ETH Zurich.
Bachelor's Degree Programs
The institute's teaching portfolio covers the mandatory undergraduate numerical analysis courses for Bachelor students of mathematics and applied mathematics and the core courses for third year Bachelor students of mathematics.
The SAM also makes a key contribution to the Bachleor curriculum in Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) in the form of the two core courses “Numerical Methods for CSE” and “Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations”.

Service Teaching
Besides, the SAM is massively involved in service teaching for engineering departments; lecturers from SAM teach linear algebra for electrical and civil engineering, and, of course, numerical methods courses for Bachleor students of mechanical and electrical engineering and of material sciences.
The courses in the SAM teaching portfolio aim to convey either mathematical foundations of numerical methods, for audience in the ETH Zurich Bachlor's and Master's degree programs in Mathematics, but also implementation and algorithmic aspects of computational methods. The teaching of implementation skills is supported by dedicated teaching software in MATLAB, Python, or C++, which has been developed and which is being maintained at SAM. Lecturers from SAM have pioneered at ETH Zurich computer based examinations for courses with a strongly algorithmic content.
