Abstract The symplectomorphism group of a symplectic manifold is an infinite-dimensional Lie group. In certain cases one can use pseudoholomorphic curves to help compute its homotopy groups (an idea first due to Gromov). We will discuss the toy case of Fano surfaces (blow-ups of the complex projective plane) where the link with algebraic geometry is extremely strong. We will also discuss some noncompact examples (Milnor fibres). Of course most manifolds don't contain enough well-behaved pseudoholomorphic curves to help compute the homotopy type of the symplectomorphism group, so we will end by looking at what one can nonetheless say when one has only irregular curves to play with (which is work in progress with J. Kedra).
