Title What is... a higher Teichmüller space?
Speaker, Affiliation Xenia Flamm, ETHZ
Date, Time 25 October 2022, 16:30-18:00
Location KO2 F 150
Abstract Hyperbolic structures on a surface are equivalent to injective homomorphisms with discrete image from its fundamental group to PSL(2,R). These are the objects of study of classical Teichmüller theory. Replacing PSL(2,R) by a higher rank Lie group, such as PSL(n,R) for n at least 3, leads to the notion of a higher rank Teichmüller space. In this talk, we will define higher rank Teichmüller spaces, discuss their existence and properties, and see an example of how they arise as geometric structures on the surface. No prior knowledge on Lie groups or hyperbolic geometry is required.

Title What is... a Monge-Ampère equation?
Speaker, Affiliation Lauro Silini, ETHZ
Date, Time 15 November 2022, 16:30-18:00
Location KO2 F 150
Abstract This talk is designed to be a friendly invitation to the wild world of Partial Differential Equations. After introducing the fascinating and two-centuries old Monge-Ampère equation, and looking at its anatomy, we will trace its relation with the theory of optimal transportation. Time permitting, we will see how this applies to prove one of the most elegant equations of geometric analysis: the isoperimetric inequality.

Title What is... a polynomial structure over a sphere?
Speaker, Affiliation Dr. Mihajlo Cekic, Universität Zürich
Date, Time 29 November 2022, 16:30-18:00
Location KO2 F 150
Abstract The main example of a polynomial structure on the unit sphere S^n is a non-constant polynomial map to another sphere S^r. We will discuss the possible values of (n, r) and the related constructions of polynomial structures. As an application, we will exhibit a link with two other apriori unrelated problems: 1) in spectral theory: ``Can one hear the shape of a drum?" for the Bochner (connection Laplacian) and 2) in dynamical systems: ergodicity of certain (partially hyperbolic) systems arising as flows of frames. This is joint work with Thibault Lefeuvre.
