Peter Bühlmann: Guy Medal in Silver
The Royal Statistical Society has awarded the 2018 Guy Medal in Silver to Professor Peter Bühlmann for his highly-cited paper "Stability selection", among other contributions.
The paper external page Stability selection was published in 2010, co-authored with Nicolai Meinshausen, was read to the Society and published in 2010. It proposes a very general method for improving the performance of an arbitrary variable selection algorithm. His citation also noted his 2016 discussion paper external page Causal inference using invariant prediction: identification and confidence intervals joint with Jonas Peters and Nicolai Meinshausen, which introduced a new notion of invariance into the causal inference literature and showed how this can be exploited, for instance to obtain confidence intervals for causal effects. Peter Bühlmann has received the prize at the 2018 International Conference of the Royal Statistical Society held in Cardiff from 3 to 6 September 2018.
