Workshops für Schulklassen

From 15 to 24 March 2022, mathematics workshops for school classes were offered during the goMATH exhibition.

In the one-hour workshops, the pupils worked in small groups on a maths problem. The level of difficulty was adapted to the respective level of knowledge of the class. The content was suitable for classes from lower secondary level upwards. The workshops were free of charge and took place on the ETH Centre campus.

The Shape of Space

Jeffrey Weeks

This workshop was conducted by Jeffrey Weeks, our guest of honour, and was dedicated to the topic of the exhibition.

Graph theory workshop
Graph models help to understand the problem.

The bridges of Königsberg

Seven bridges connect the three districts of Königsberg, which are separated by a river. Is there a path that crosses each bridge exactly once to return to the starting point?

Using models, this problem from graph theory is played out in abstract form and the question is clarified under which conditions a solution exists.

Comparing the areas of polygons

How can you sort polygons according to the size of their area without any aids?

With the help of wooden puzzles, the polygons are broken down into pieces from which you can construct a square. If you put these pieces together, the newly created squares can be directly compared and sorted by size.
