Martin Mächler: newly appointed adjunct professor

We are delighted to announce that Dr Martin Mächler was appointed Adjunct Professor at the meeting of the ETH Board in May 2020.

Martin Mächler has been at the Seminar for Statistics (SfS) for many years. In 1989 he completed his doctoral thesis at the SfS and went to the USA for two years. Since his return in 1991 he conducts research in the fields of curve estimation, robust statistics, clustering, mixed models, copulas, and applications of statistics. In addition there is another achievement that made him world famous: the co-development of external page R – a programming language for statistical computing and statistical graphics. "R" is one of the best known open source tools of statistical research and data analysis all over the world.

Dr Martin Mächler (*1959), currently Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich, as Adjunct Professor at ETH Zurich. Martin Mächler has earned global recognition for his work at the interface of statistical computing, software development and methodological research in statistics. His groundbreaking work contributed to the creation and development of R, a statistical programming language.
