Peter Hinz successfully passed his oral doctoral thesis examination entitled: "An analysis of the piece-​wise affine structure of ReLU feed-​forward neural networks". Congratulations!  

Pratyuksh Bansal successfully passed his oral doctoral thesis examination entitled: "Numerical approximation of the acoustic wave equation and of statistical solutions of the incompressible Navier-​stokes equations". Congratulations!

For mathematician Joaquim Serra, sketches are a gateway to insight. Sketching out geometric relationships helps him unlock the abstract reasonings required to prove his theorems. On Sunday, he was honoured for his research into partial differential equations with the European Mathematical Society’s EMS Prize. This honour is awarded only every four years, each time to ten researchers under the age of 36.

Three Department members will be represented at this year's European Congress of Mathematics (8ECM): Peter Bühlmann as Plenary Speaker, Emmanuel Kowalski as Invited Speaker, and Joaquim Serra to be presented with an EMS Prize.
