Welcome to ETH Zurich
19 September marked the start of studies once again at ETH Zurich. More than 350 Bachelor's, Master's and exchange students have enrolled for the degree programmes in Mathematics, Statistics or Computational Science and Engineering. We asked them why they have decided to study at ETH, what they are looking forward to and where they see their personal challenges.
Aurin and David have both completed the external page Passerelle (German) university entrance exam and are now commuting daily from Basel to Zurich. Aurin's interest in mathematics developed as he was working towards the Passerelle, and David has been interested in the subject for quite a long time already. In addition to the study content, the two are looking forward to the opportunity to meet new people and experience the city life of Zurich.
Flavia's interest in mathematics developed at her Gymnasium school, partly thanks to the encouragement of her teacher. She is looking forward to meeting new people and hopes to expand her network and find a great study group.
Andi was introduced to mathematics in primary school by his brother and it later became his passion. He enjoys developing his own theories and proving them. He is looking forward to algebra and analysis but is apprehensive about stochastics and probability.
Thomas studied mechanical engineering at Zurich University of Applied Sciences, where his interest in mathematics was sparked. He enjoyed it so much that he now wants to add an ETH Bachelor's degree to his qualifications. Like his fellow students, he is looking forward to meeting new people, and to the numerics classes, as this is one of his favourite topics. He is most nervous about starting out on something new and hopes that will be able to settle in well.
For Romana, two things were particularly important when she was choosing her field of study: firstly, she was keen to do something she enjoys, and secondly, she wanted her chosen degree to open up a wide range of career paths. She believes mathematics is an excellent starting point for this because it is initially in-depth and demanding, but later becomes broader and offers many job opportunities. She is looking forward to the independence being a student will bring and also to meeting her new classmates, but apprehensive about the amount of work and the exams.
We wish everyone a successful start!
