It is the fourth time that Mathys Douma has taken part in the IMO. In 2022, he won a Bronze medal for Switzerland and now he has gone on to better this by winning a Gold medal at this year’s competition. This is a remarkable result as it is only the second time that the Swiss team have taken home a Gold medal. But Mathys Douma is not the only member of the Swiss team to receive a medal. His colleagues Bora Olmez, Jonah Osterwalder and Felix Xu have all won a Bronze medal and Ivan Pouly has been given recognition for his performance.

Douma, Olmez and Xu have all participated in the ETH Math Youth Academy, one of the various outreach programmes organised by the Department. The Academy was launched in 2015 by the Department of Mathematics together with the National Centre of Competence in Research SwissMAP. It is especially designed for Gymnasium students aged 13 or above who want to delve deeper into creative mathematical thinking.
