Werner Stahel has joined the Seminar für Statistik in 1976 and has obtained the title of a professor (Titularprofessor) in 2004. He has retiered in 2013. Formerly, he lead the statistical consulting service and the postgraduate course "Nachdiplomkurs in angewandter Statistik".
Born in 1948 in Zurich, he studied mathematics at the University of Zurich from 1967 to 1973. He got in contact with research in ecology as an assistant of the Zoologisches Museum. He obtained his PhD degree from ETH Zurich in 1981 and spent a year at Bell Labs in New Jersey.
His scientific interest concentrates on robust statistics and on general aspects and methods of data. He is involved with diverse scientific projects as a statistical expert.
