2021 Graduation Ceremony
Last Friday, the graduates of the Mathematics, Statistics as well as the Computational Science and Engeneering (CSE) Master's degree programmes celebrated their successful graduation. We wish them all the best for the future!
The ceremony took place in a hybrid format: the winners of the ETH Medal and the Willi Studer Prize were on site at the Auditorium Maximum and the rest of the graduates were connected via live stream.
Director of Studies Marloes Maathuis welcomed the graduates and guided them through the ceremony.
The first guest speaker was Alessio Figalli, who gave a brief introduction to the topic that has occupied him for many years and for which he received the 2018 Fields Medal. In his keynote speech "Optimal Transport: from Nature to Machine Learning", he spoke about his career and that even he, as a medal winner, needed many attempts before he finally found the right approach to solving this problem.
The second guest speaker was student representative Kevin Doninelli. He spoke about the feeling of being lost in the first days and weeks of his studies and how he was constantly searching for lecture halls or buildings but also for new colleagues. He spoke about his transformation from a consumer of study content to a producer of his own Master's thesis and how he eventually became part of the ETH community and came to love the dignified old walls.
Marloes Maathuis, Ralf Hiptmair and Manfred Einsiedler, the directors of the respective degree programmes, congratulated the students on their graduation, which comes at a difficult time with many challenges. They all emphasised that with the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies, the graduates have a very good foundation on which to build their future.
Robert Salzmann from Math Phys Alumni presented the programme and the areas of activity of the alumni association, such as the member events or the mentorship programme, which brings young professionals together with students.
As a part of the ceremony, outstanding Master's theses have been honoured with the ETH Medal and the best students in every Master's degree programme have received the Willi Studer Prize.
