Heinz Hopf Prize for Richard Schoen

The Department of Mathematics has awarded the 2017 Heinz Hopf Prize to the American mathematician Richard Schoen.

by Monika Krichel

Richard Schoen, professor at Stanford University and the University of California at Irvine, is one of the world's leading researchers in the field of general relativity, just at the border of mathematics and physics. He has received the 2017 Heinz Hopf Prize for his outstanding and fundamental contributions to differential geometry and geometric analysis.

Mete Soner, Chair of the Departement, handed over the prize to Richard Schoen at the award ceremony on 30 October 2017. The ceremony took place on the occasion of the Heinz Hopf Lecture entitled "How curvature shapes space" where Richard Schoen presented his research work. Michael Stuwe, professor at the Department, honoured the work of Richard Schoen in his laudatory speech.
