Abstract One of the most remarkable predictions of string/M-theory is the existence of 5-dimensional superconformal field theories (5d SCFTs). There are two main approaches for constructing these 5d SCFTs, using either M-theory on canonical 3-fold singularities, or intersecting branes in Type IIB string theory. A natural question is to compare these two approaches. The answer is well-known for webs of 5-branes in Type IIB string theory, where the M-theory dual canonical 3-fold singularity is a toric Calabi–Yau 3-fold.  In this talk,  building on recent advances in mirror symmetry and enumerative geometry, I will provide an answer for the more general case of webs of 5-branes with 7-branes and explain how to construct the M-theory dual non-toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. This is joint work with Valery Alexeev and Hulya Arguz.

Abstract The D-equivalence conjecture of Bondal and Orlov predicts that birational Calabi-Yau varieties have equivalent derived categories of coherent sheaves.  I will explain how to prove this conjecture for hyperkahler varieties of K3^[n] type (i.e. those that are deformation equivalent to Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces).  This is joint work with Junliang Shen, Qizheng Yin, and Ruxuan Zhang.

Abstract Weil–Petersson volumes are fascinating objects. They are defined as volumes of moduli spaces of oriented hyperbolic surfaces, and they satisfy the so-called Mirzakhani's recursion. The goal of this talk is to discuss a non-orientable analogue of Weil–Petersson volumes as well as their recursive structure. I will show how volumes are defined, compute the volume of hyperbolic Klein bottles, and most importantly, explore a possible relation to other objects in mathematics such as the Virasoro algebra and topological recursion. This talk is based on a joint work with Elba Garcia-Failde and Paolo Gregori.

Abstract I will present a result connecting higher genus descendant logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants of toric surfaces to refined counts of tropical curves. I will then discuss some applications. First, how it can be used to relate higher genus descendant invariants of log Calabi-Yau surfaces with quantum scattering diagrams, generalising an expectation coming from mirror symmetry. I will then briefly mention how these tropical correspondence theorems may help with computing the quantum cohomology ring of the Hilbert scheme of points on an elliptic surface. This is based on joint work Patrick Kennedy-Hunt and Ajith Urundolil Kumaran, as well as conversations with Georg Oberdieck.

Datum, Zeit 7. März 2025, 16:00-17:30
Ort HG G 43
Abstract The Hilbert scheme of points on a quasi-projective variety is a classical object in algebraic geometry. However, its geometry is nowadays still not completely accessible. On the other hand, the motive of a variety X is an invariant attached to X carrying a lot of information about its geometry, and it is considered as a universal Euler characteristic. In a joint project with Monavari, Moschetti and Ricolfi we give general formulas to compute the motive of the Hilbert scheme of points, provided the knowledge of a finite amount of data (that we gave explicitly in some cases). In my seminar I will present our formulas and I will show many applications.

Abstract In analogy with the classical situation of a general algebraic curve, Hurwitz-Brill-Noether addresses the question which linear systems appear on a general k-gonal curve of genus g. In recent years, due to impressive work of Pflueger, H. Larson, Jensen, Ranganathan and others an answer to this question has been put forward, using a mix of tropical and degeneration methods. I will discuss a radically new approach to this problem using Bridgeland stability conditions and present new applications, for instance concerning  the construction of Hurwitz-Brill-Noether generic curves defined over number fields. Joint with S. Feyzbakhsh and A. Rojas.

Abstract The Castelnuovo bound conjecture, which is proposed by physicists, predicts an effective vanishing result for Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one. Abstract There are two main recipes to associate to a Cohomological Field Theory (CohFT) an integrable hierarchy of hamiltonian PDEs: the first one was introduced by Dubrovin and Zhang (DZ, 2001), the second by Buryak (DR, 2015). It is interesting to notice that the latter relies on the geometric properties of the Double Ramification cycle — hence the name DR — to work. As soon as the second recipe was introduced, it was conjectured that the two had to be equivalent in some sense, and it was checked in a few examples. In the forthcoming years several papers followed, checking more examples of CohFTs, making the conjecture more precise, proving the conjecture in low genera, and eventually turning the statement of the conjecture in a purely intersection theoretic statement on the moduli spaces of stable curves. Lately, the conjecture was proved in its intersection theoretic form, employing virtual localisation techniques. (j.w.w. Blot, Rossi, Shadrin).

Abstract I will present a formula of the S_n-equivariant Euler characteristics of genus one stable maps to the projective space. It enriches the ordinary Euler characteristics, which are previously unkown, and continues the results of Getzler - Pandharipande on genus zero stable maps. The approach connects torus localization, composition structure on the Grothendieck ring of varieties, and graph enumeration techniques via wreath symmetric functions. Joint work with Siddarth Kannan.
