Abstract Extremal Combinatorics is one of the central branches of discrete mathematics which deals with the problem of estimating the maximum possible size of a combinatorial structure which satisfies certain restrictions. Often, such problems have also applications to other areas including Theoretical Computer Science, Additive Number Theory and Information Theory. In this talk we will illustrate this fact by several closely related examples focusing on a recent work with Alon and Moitra.

Abstract I will discuss the classical problem of estimating moments of L-functions with emphasis on those L-functions coming from automorphic forms. In particular, I will give an asymptotic formula for the cubic moment of GL_2 L-functions which was previously estimated by Conrey and Iwaniec. This is the first such formula which has been given for a moment of L-functions whose ratio of conductor to family size is comparable to the sixth moment of the Riemann zeta function.

Abstract In 1985, Gross and Zagier discovered a beautiful factorization formula for the norm of singuli moduli, i.e, $j(\tau_1) -j(\tau_2)$ where $j$ is the famous j-function and \tau_i are two imaginary numbers of different discriminant. Since j(\frac{1+\sqrt{-3}}2=0$, this also gives a factorization formula for norm of j(tau). One amusing fact is that although these numbers are huge, its prime factor are very small. Using regularized theta lifting and Borcherds product, Schofar generalized the work to `small' CM values of Borcherds forms on a Shimura variety, covering in particular the norm of j(tau), but not the norm of difference. In this talk, we will discuss how to extend the idea to get similar result and generalization to `big CM', which also cover the norm of difference. By enlarging the class of weakly holomorphic forms (in the starting point), we also deal with the so-called automorphic green functions and the central derivative of L-function shows up naturally.

Abstract We define a collection of special 1-cycles on certain Shimura 3-folds associated to U(2,1) x U(1,1) and appearing in the context of the Gan--Gross--Prasad conjectures. We study and compare the action of the Hecke algebra and the Galois group on these cycles via distribution relations and congruence relations that would ultimately lead to the construction of a novel Euler system for these Shimura arieties. The comparison is achieved adelically using Bruhat--Tits theory for the corresponding buildings.
